How do squats work your arms, namely biceps?

Thursday, July 31st, 2008

I just started doing squats on a hack machine and I’m curious how squats actually work your biceps, etc

With due respect to Chris, as he seems dedicated to fitness, he doesn’t yet understand the equation for building body mass.

I’ve been at the bodybuilding game for a long time (18 years competing). I’ve owned a gym and trained athletes for contact sports for the past ten years. Here is the scoop:

Your body will keep your arms in proportion to the rest of you. Squats make you thick, they make your metabolism skyrocket, and the balancing and shifting of the body’s fulcrums make the squat involve just about everything. Because the whole body is involved, you can use heavy weight. Heavy weight builds mass. Mass makes your body stronger. When you are stronger, every one of your lifts go up.

Also keep in mind that other complex movements like deadlifts, bench press, military presses, bent over rows, and pullups complete the package.

I will stake my reputation and career spent training young athletes on this statement:

Give me two guys, similar height, weight and genetics. I’ll train one with nothing but the exercises I mentioned. Not a single curl or triceps press. The other one will do the usual endless sets of curls, pushdown, kickbacks, cable crossovers and anything else he read about in a BB magazine. In 12 weeks my guys arms will be 2-3″ bigger and he will weigh 12-15 lbs more of solid muscle than the other. In six months, it won’t even be a race anymore.

…………..

Because squats out of any exercise release the most growth hormone.Squats mostly work your legs lower back and abs.But i have heard that this power lifter all he did was squats for a month nothing else but his bench went up 20 pounds because of the increased growth hormone kind of like when a guy turns around 20 or 21 his bench can go up to 70 ponds more without weight lifting because at that age you get an increase of growth hormone and testarone.

…………….

squats dont work your arms, they mainly work your quadriceps.

Will I get hurt if lightning strikes my computer?

Wednesday, July 30th, 2008

I’m scared of getting struck by lightning so I always go inside and unplug everything except my fridge and my computer. Using my computer during a storm helps me forget about my fear and distract myself. I know there is a possibility that lightning could strike my computer but I was wondering if I will get hurt if that happens.

Well of course lightning won’t strike the computer directly, it hits a power or telephone line and a huge amount of current flows through that line into your computer.

Most likely you own a surge protector(which is not JUST a power strip, but I think it’s uncommon to see power strips that aren’t also surge protectors any more)which is designed to cut your computer off when exposed to a sudden “surge” in power. Some are rated to handle lightning strikes, some aren’t. You can get a good one for not much more than 30 bucks.

It’s a sudden burst in current that your computer experiences. The wires and chips inside the computer are designed to take such and such amount of current. Obviously lightning is a lot of current, and everything will overheat which will destroy the electronics, and you may smell burning insulation from the wires, but it usually won’t start a fire or blow your monitor up or anything. But it’ll be the end of your computer of course. If you don’t have any type of protection, it’s a good idea to not just cut it off but to also unplug it to remove the connection between the computer and outside.

—–

I doubt that lightling will strike your computer directly (unless your computer happens to be outside on your roof). If your house is grounded, the most likely scenario if lightning hits your house is the power goes out. You will probably not get shocked.

If you’re really worried, get a surge protector for your computer.

How do color indicators show the presence of the substance being investigated?

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

It depends on the indicator and on the substance.

In acid-base investigations, the indicator changes colour depending on [H+] or [OH-]. These indicators tend to be weak acids or bases, with the protonated and deprotonated forms having different colours.

In other investigations, such as redox, the oxidised and reduced species have different colours, or a complex exists between the indicator and one species, but not another. An example of the redox species having different colours is a potassium permanganate reaction. MnO4- is purple in colour, but the reduced form, Mn2+, is colourless. An example of a complex is ferroin, which is red when combined with Fe2+, but cannot combine with Fe3+, so the colour disappears.

Complexation indicators depend on the presence or absence of complexes. Eriochrome black forms a red complex in the presence of metal ions. When the metal ions are removed, the indicator turns blue. Murexide turns red in the presence of calcium, but is violet when no calcium is present.

——–

An indicator is usually a weak acid or base where the conjugate is a different color.
So let’s assume you have some acid A-H where A is some large organic structure that has a hydrogen it can release. When the H is still on the structure it is one color (let’s say blue) and when the H is taken off it turns to another color (let’s say maize).
So you end up with this H-A (blue) –> H+ + A- (maize)
When you have this in a strong acid, you will get the blue form, and when it goes into a basic solution it will turn maize.

Help with Mother-In-Law from Hell?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

I have been married to my husband for 15 years, and for 15 years I have put up with my Mother-in-Law. When we first got married I tried to be as nice as i could be with her. I would take her to lunch, go shopping with her, talk to her, etc. But as the years went by all she would do is complain about everything and everybody…so I stopped.

She is now 79 years old and is worse than ever. She has 3 sons and 1 daughter and all of them have dissowned her except for my husband. No one visits or calls her. It has gotten so bad that we won’t answer the phone because SHE might be calling. We can’t move away (because my husband feels that someone has to look out for her). She lives less than a mile from us. I have so many stories to tell of just how evil she is but there isn’t enough space. As of today we had a big argument over the phone and now I am not talking to her.

She’s an old woman and the mother of your husband, whom he happens to love dearly. She’s harmless, I’m sure she doesn’t even understand why she’s evil or bitter. Besides you’ve put up with her for so long, it won’t hurt to keep hanging in there a little longer. I know it’s easy for me to say because I don’t have to deal with her. She’s probably just stuck in her ways and believe her way to be right. If she’s not doing anything malicious other than her nagging, just bear patience with her and be kind. It will probably kill her to see that your husband and yourself are the only ones who continue to be a part of her life when she has driven others away with her evil ways. Keep your head up, one day she’ll realize and change and be thankful to you both. What time she has left, you all need to be good to her. Stay strong and keep your head up.

……………

Stop arguing with this old lady. Your husband is right, he has an obligation to take care of her. That’s just the way it is. You’ve been around long enough to be smarter than she is, so keep your distance but support your husband with his obligation. Luckily 79 is pretty darn close to 80 and well eventually this won’t be a problem. Also, if you guys haven’t talked to her doctor, do so, and tell them about her behavior. Make sure you are not dealing with a symptom of a disease.

…………..

If this is a pattern of cruel behavior on her part, and this is the way she treats her own sons and daughter, then no offense, she does not deserve anyone to look out for her.

Of course, you can’t really approach your husband about this, because it is his own mother…but the best I can tell you is to just cut off ties with her personally. He can call her to check up on her, but you have no obligation to talk to her whatsoever. And if you have kids, I’d advise not letting them visit…from what it sounds like, she may start to tell your kids her opinions of the rest of the family, and they’d be getting false information that way that they do not need to hear.

What happens if you dont have health insurance for a few months during 2008 in Massachusetts?

Monday, July 28th, 2008

my friend just quit her job and she is working on some side jobs but def doesnt have health insurance. She will not reciev it until she lands a job that offers it to her or decides to pay out of pocket for it. What will happen when she goes to claim taxes for the year of 2008 if she gets health insurance by then? Will she me penalized for not having it for a few months?

So i did a little looking around, cause i also live in MA and was jobless at one point during the year. what i have found is that if your friend chooses not to enroll in some sort of health plan coverage she can be fined up to 150 a month!! though to be honest I’m not really sure how they will know this or not. Good Luck

Look under the “what is i still don’t enroll” section.

Massachusetts has free health insurance for people who can’t afford it. If she can afford it, she may have be fined when she files her taxes next year. The fines can be as much as $900 or so. I doubt her case would be more than a couple hundred in fines.

Go to http://www.mahealthconnector.org and find a plan. If she qualifies, she may not have to pay a single cent. It’s called Commonwealth Care.

Edit:
They find out that you don’t have insurance when you file your state taxes. You receive a form from your insurance carrier, like you would your W-4, and have to attach it to your state tax forms.

Do mosquitos, specifically Aedes, stick to walls?

Saturday, July 26th, 2008

Serious answers, please. And may you give more additional information and details about it?

The Aedes are the most common of the35 species of mosquito’s in our area of Michigan, I don’t know where you live of course.
They may be resting but, do nor “stick” to the walls. Of course the male mosquito will sit for periods of time, they don’t look to anything to bite, only the female.
