Six ‘perfect parenting’ myths revealed

Monday, December 15th, 2008

“Perfect” parents trying hard to meet their children’s every need may be doing more harm than good, claims a book.

Sydney psychologist Renee Mill said that parents are exhausted and stressed while trying to fulfil every demand of their kids.

In her new book, ‘No Sweat Parenting’, Mill has listed out six “perfect parenting” myths.

She writes that this is in a well intentioned but misguided belief that quality time means sitting on the floor playing whatever game their child wants.

Other myths include that parents must be perfect; firm discipline will quash a child’s self-esteem; parenting and adult life have to be conducted separately; parents cannot deprive their kids of material goods; and that parents have to shield children from any problems or disappointments in life.

Mill insists that, with these myths, parents are bringing up a generation of kids believe they are the centre of the universe.

“We are growing monsters,” the Sydney Morning Herald quoted her as saying.

The six ‘perfect parenting’ myths are:

1. Need to spend ‘quality time’

2. Parents must be perfect

3. Firm discipline will quash a child’s self-esteem

4. Parenting and adult life have to be conducted separately

5. Parents cannot deprive their kids of material goods

6. Parents have to shield children from any problems or disappointments in life

McCartney’s ‘Eleanor Rigby’ may have been Liverpool scullery maid

Wednesday, November 12th, 2008

Sir Paul McCartney may have unknowingly revealed that the women who inspired The Beatles’ 1966 hit ‘Eleanor Rigby’ actually existed.

For about 42 years, music fans have been confused whether E. Rigby ever live, or was she non-existent.

Now, documents carrying the signatures of the woman have surfaced suggesting her to be a scullery maid, reports the Independent.

McCartney donated an accounts register from Liverpool’s City Hospital to charity - revealing that an E. Rigby worked there.

The document has been signed by the maid. It was sent to singer Annie Mawson in 1990 after she appealed to McCartney for a 500,000 pounds donation to help teach music to children with special needs.

It arrived without any letter of explanation in a plain brown envelope bearing a ‘Paul McCartney World Tour’ stamp.

The accounts log shows the pay received by E. Rigby and is dated November 30, 1911.

McCartney has previously claimed that he used the name Eleanor in the much-loved 1966 song after actress ‘Eleanor Bron’ appeared in The Beatles’ film ‘Help!’

McCartney has previously claimed that he used the name Eleanor in the much-loved 1966 song after actress Eleanor Bron appeared in The Beatles’ film ‘Help!’

In the 1980s, however, the grave of an Eleanor Rigby was discovered in Liverpool in the churchyard of St. Peter’s Parish in Woolton - a place both Sir Paul and bandmate John Lennon were known to visit.

Her tombstone has become a landmark for Beatles fans visiting Liverpool.

The accounts sheet sent by McCartney would appear to confirm that he based the song on a real person. The register, which is expected to fetch 500,000 pounds, will be auctioned for charity in London later this month.

Mawson, founder and chief executive of charity Sunbeams Music Trust, said yesterday: “I wrote to Paul McCartney in 1990 to tell him how I was working at a special school in Cumbria.

“One of the boys was autistic - but one of his obsessions was the Beatles. I built up a very trusting relationship with him and taught him to play ‘Yellow Submarine’ on the piano, which got him his Duke of Edinburgh Silver Award.

“It was very moving to see how he came out of his very locked up and insular world. I wanted Paul McCartney to know this. I also wanted to set up a centre of my own. I asked him for half a million pounds, but by the time I’d finished my 11 pages I said, ‘Actually Paul, I don’t want any money, I want you to know what joy you brought’.

“Months later, I got a reply with a logo that meant it could only have come from Paul McCartney’s office. Inside there was this document dated 1911. Then I saw the name Rigby and I realised why I’d been sent it. I feel that when you’re holding it you’re holding a bit of history.”

Mawson, 58, is selling the document now to raise funds towards building of the charity’s new 1million pounds centre near Penrith in Cumbria.

The auction is being held at the Idea Generation galley in east London, on 27 November.

Katherine Heigl, hubby considering ‘adopting’ Korean baby

Monday, October 20th, 2008

Katherine Heigl and hubby Josh Kelley have drawn up plans to adopt a Korean baby by next year, according to reports.

The celebrity couple has allegedly decided upon South Korea since Heigl’s elder sister, Meg, was adopted from the country.

Meg is said to have been a strong influence on Heigl’s life, a fact that has encouraged the couple towards adoption.

“Meg has had a profound impact on Katherine’s life, which is why she and Josh are trying to adopt a Korean child,” the Daily Express quoted a source as telling the ‘National Enquirer’.

“They’ve chosen an adoption agency and have started filing the necessary paperwork.

“They haven’t gone public with the news yet because they want to make sure there are no problems before they make an announcement,” the source added.

Previously, the 29-year-old ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ star revealed that she believes it was not essential to produce kids biologically.

She said, “I’m done with the whole idea of having my own children. It doesn’t seem like any fun. I don’t think it’s necessary to go through all of that.” (ANI)

Disco tune ‘Stayin’ Alive’ could save your life

Friday, October 17th, 2008

U.S. doctors have found the Bee Gees 1977 disco anthem “Stayin’ Alive” provides an ideal beat to follow while performing chest compressions as part of CPR on a heart attack victim.

The American Heart Association calls for chest compressions to be given at a rate of 100 per minute in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). “Stayin’ Alive” almost perfectly matches that, with 103 beats per minute.

CPR is a lifesaving technique involving chest compressions alone or with mouth-to-mouth rescue breathing. It is used in emergencies such as cardiac arrest in which a person’s breathing or heartbeat has stopped.

CPR can triple survival rates, but some people are reluctant to do it in part because they are unsure about the proper rhythm for chest compressions. But research has shown many people do chest compressions too slowly during CPR.

In a small study headed by Dr. David Matlock of the University of Illinois College of Medicine at Peoria, listening to “Stayin’ Alive” helped 15 doctors and medical students to perform chest compressions on dummies at the proper speed.

Five weeks after practicing with the music playing, they were asked to perform CPR again on dummies by keeping the song in their minds, and again they kept up a good pace.

“The theme ‘Stayin’ Alive’ is very appropriate for the situation,” Matlock said in a telephone interview on Thursday. “Everybody’s heard it at some point in their life. People know the song and can keep it in their head.”

The findings will be presented this month at a meeting of the American College of Emergency Physicians in Chicago.
