Why is my 8 year old cat?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007
  1. He is marking his territory. Or take him to the vet just to make sure. But I’m pretty sure he is just marking his territory
  2. Well it COULD be just an aging cat thing, however urinary problems are common with male cats. He could have a bladder infection, or worse- kidney or bladder stones. I lost a male cat to bladder stones. Peeing around the house was the first sign of any problem, and by then it was too late. Some other health problems like diabetes and tumors can cause this too. If I were you, I’d take him to the vet right away and make sure he’s alright.
  3. some one has come inside your house with another cat scent on their shoes, cats have a good nose, so your cat smells it and trys to out spray it with it’s pee!!Try cleaning some areas with citiral oil.
  4. I won’t waste time with a lengthy answer, but.. this site here:
    http://www.hdw-inc.com/litterbox.htm
Has plenty of information on your problem, just scroll down a little to “URINE MARKING AND SPRAYING” and read up on that.
  5. Inappropriate elimination is often a symptom of urinary tract infection. The cat begins to associate the pain he experiences while peeing with the litter box, so goes elsewhere. He might also be trying to get your attention.

So your first step is to have the cat evaluated by a veterinarian. If you notice he is straining a lot but not producing much (may seem constipated), then it is urgent enough to find an emergency vet after hours. Male cats sometimes get blocked up, and then it is only a matter of hours before it is too late. If he is not completely blocked up, then it can wait until morning - but make sure to get him in to see the vet tomorrow.

Here is a link to a good article on how to solve litter box problems, in case it’s not a medical issue http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/our_pe…

  6. He is marking his territory.
  7. is he spraying or urinating?

the first thing that comes to my mind, especially with an older cat is kidney issues or diabetes. it could also be a urinary tract infection. if this is a new thing for him to do, a trip to the vets is a good idea. if its not a medical issue they can advise you on what to do for behavior problems.

How often is there a general election in Britain?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

General elections are held at least every five years. However not all Parliaments run for the whole five years, and a general election may be held before this period is up. In the event of a government having a small majority the election may well take place much earlier. For example, the general election of February 1974 resulted in a minority Labour government. The then Prime Minister, Harold Wilson, therefore called another election in October 1974, which resulted in Labour increasing its representation to just above 50% of the number of seats. Despite its small overall majority, the Labour government then remained in power for four-and-a-half years, finally calling an election in May 1979.

The last General Election was held on 5 May 2005.

In between general elections, by-elections are held as necessary to elect a new Member of Parliament to an individual constituency.

Is it better to use real or fake plants in an aquarium?

Wednesday, October 3rd, 2007

As far as the fish go, they don’t care either way. Keeping real plants can be a very rewarding experience. However, if they keep dying, it can also be infuriating!

Do you have a fluorescent bulb? If so, then there’s no reason that you shouldn’t try your hand with a few plants. Most plants will quickly overgrow such a small tank, so try plants like banana plants, moss balls, or anubias.

Your fishes’ waste should produce adequate fertilizer, but you can also pick up some trace elements (phosphorous etc) for plants (macros and micros), but only use a teensy bit.

Do journalism and politics mix?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Perhaps the major issue here is defining public interest and the form that the presentation thereof takes. People’s opinions on what defines relevant news varies, and objective presentation, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. Hyperbole is maligned by some, praised by others. It’s less a matter of what is objective than it is of who can determine what is objective.

Journalists have the duty to seek and present the truth, so inherently they must question authority, but their questioning must be based on contrary information, or to inquiry about verification. Challenging authority should never be about egos. Illegitimate questions come at the expense of integrity.

How do I stop my dog from jumping on me or other people?

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

Well, years ago a trainer suggested a knee in the chest for my American Eskimo, but this didn’t phase her one bit. So I don’t really feel this method is very effective in very hyper dogs really… and that seems to be your case.

Our current trainer told us to immediately say “off” in a firm voice and turn our backs on the puppy until she is down on all 4’s, at which time, we immediately turn around, praise her and say “Good off” in a pleasant tone.

Kneeing a dog down, or yelling at them no, without doing anything else is still a form of attention, even if it’s negative. The idea here is to “remove” the reward for jumping up, which is to turn your back and ignore the dog until he does as you want.

The hard part is getting family and friends to help you on this. More than once I have had someone say to me, “oh, it’s okay, she’s just excited”. Okay, sure, that person doesn’t mind, but what about someone who does. I have had to persistently remind family and friends how to handle the jumping up situation to help us discourage it all together. If you allow it sometimes, it sends mixed signals and confuses the dog as to what you want of them. It’s VERY IMPORTANT that you ALWAYS address the jumping behavior each and every time.

This has worked well with our Border Collie puppy and tho it does take time to accomplish (so be patient and persistent) it will work. Putting your dog in a sit is a very good thing too and is something you can impliment once you have the jumping more under control.

Edit: Also, never step backwards to get your dog down on all 4’s as you are “allowing” him to have your space and as an alpha pack leader, you shouldn’t allow this.

How do you clean a fishtank?

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

Actually a lot depends on the type of tank you have. I will give details for two common types. The small fish bowl and the small aquarium tank.
Fish Bowl.

Using a fish net, carefully catch the fish and place in another bowl or clean container that has never been washed by soap. Rinse the tank well and be sure to get the debris out of the gravel, etc. Add room temp water and a dechlorinator and reintroduce fish.

While fish bowls are effective for a Betta, it is actually a very bad idea to keep other fish, especially goldfish in a fish bowl. They need much more space and water oxygenation.

A small aquarium should not have to be completely changed. Each week, you should be able to remove 20 to 40% of the volume and replace with fresh clean water. There are many easy to use siphons with gravel cleaning attachments. These are excellent for removing debris from the gravel and siphoning water into a sink or bucket. Once you have remove a portion of the water, rinse your bucket well and refill with treated water at room temperature or as close to the tank temp as possible. It is important to use dechlorinated water as many cities use chlorine and chloramine to treat water and this is toxic to fish.

NEVER use soap on aquariums. Soaps leave residue that is toxic to fish. Often the phospahtes and the detergents added to cleansers will cause distress and even death in fish. Use warm water and if you need to scrub, add salt as a scouring agent and rinse very well.

Partial water changes are best for any aquarium, as it does not disturb the bacterial balance the tanks needs to do well, and it removes many of the biological waste products that build up. A total tear down of any tank larger than 5 gallons is not advised and you should do partial water changes.

I have a pet fish but my fish won’t eat anymore. How do I make it eat again?

Monday, September 3rd, 2007

I have had this problem before and here are a few things to think about…

1. Is your fish too cold? Bettas are tropical fish that like temperatures above 75 degrees. Sometimes, especially in winter, they get cold and lethargic. Keep them in a warmer area in the house for better results.

2. Is your fish getting enough sunlight? I’ve notice that if I place my fish in sunlight for an hour a day and make sure they have adequate lighting otherwise they eat better. Bettas are day light feeders. (They have to see what they eat) so not giving your pet enough light could be telling his/her little mind that it’s always dusk or night and will make it not want to eat.

3. Is your pet bored with food? Try a small amount of bloodworms each day. They are good for you fish, float continuously so you don’t have to monitor feeding, and don’t foul your water like tubiflex worms or other betta foods can.

4. Have you changed it’s water lately? If so you may have shocked him by not adjusting him to the water properly. Next time let the clean water sit overnight so that the chlorine comes out and so that it equalizes with room temp. Also put about 1/4 of the water back in with him from the original water. (They seem to do better this way.) If you have shocked him he/she may not eat for a few days. Try to only change your betta’s water once a month. If it gets nasty really fast you need to change food, feed less, or get a filtered tank.

5. Is there a plant in the bowl with him/her? Many people have the misconception that betta’s eat the “stuff” off the roots of plants and thus put plants in with fish. (I.E. those fish vases you see that seem to be so popular) In actuality betta’s don’t eat anything from the plant. Betta’s are insectivores and need lot’s of protien to keep them healthy. (Which can be found in fish foods made for bettas) Also plants rob the water of precious oxygen. If the fish can’t get to the top of the water they may “drown” so to speak because bettas breath air to supliment them in oxygen deficient water.

Here’s a good site for light food suggestions…

I use this site quite often personally. It’s one of my personal favorites because the person who runs it is a breeder and very knowledgable. It has all kinds of tips on subjects ranging from feeding, to breeding, to pictures of different breeds….
