Saturday, August 16th, 2008

im doing a cruise critic meet and greet on the norwegian spirit and for anyone whos done a m& g before can you tell me what its like?

It’s a chance to meet all the people you have been chatting too on the forum. You get too put faces to names and have a chat about the cruise, how many you’ve been on, what you are going to do etc:
You usually arrange to meet up for a drink later on in the cruise for another get together and of course you see all these people you have met around the ship.
It’s good fun and worth going to.

High-level committee on aviation to meet today

Friday, August 15th, 2008

A high-level panel headed by the Cabinet Secretary is scheduled to meet in New Delhi on Thursday for the first time to examine the problems faced by Indian carriers.

The Committee, set up by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, would recommend measures for sustained growth and healthy development of the industry and to ensure that the experience of 1990s when several Indian airlines closed down does not recur.

The panel was set up on 9th July after a delegation of the Indian aviation industry leaders and Civil Aviation Minister Praful Patel met the prime minister to discuss various aspects of the crisis.

The Indian airlines have jointly suffered an estimated loss of Rs 4,000 crore last year, which is expected to double this financial year.

At least 24 airlines the world over have folded up in the past six months, according to IATA figures.

The Committee has Secretaries of the ministries of Finance, Civil Aviation, Revenue, Petroleum and Natural Gas and the Planning Commission, IDFC Chairman Deepak Parekh and IIM Ahmedabad Professor, Dr Raghuram.

It would examine and assess the financial difficulties and study the global scenario and practices followed by other governments and airlines.

Four ULFA militants killed ahead of I-Day in Assam

Friday, August 15th, 2008

Guwahati, Aug 13 (IANS) Four separatists have been killed Wednesday in two separate gun battles with security forces in India’s northeastern state of Assam, even as a massive security alert was sounded across the region with the rebels announcing a boycott of the country’s Independence Day.

A police spokesman said two militants of the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) were killed in a shoot-out with a joint team of the police and the soldiers in western Assam’s Bongaigaon district.

“The two ULFA militants on bicycles were challenged by security forces, but the rebels lobbed a grenade and tried to escape when they were shot dead,” a police official said.

The security forces did not suffer any casualties.

In another incident in the adjoining Nalbari district, two more ULFA militants were killed in a shoot-out.

The police, the paramilitary and the army were put on a high alert across Assam, ahead of I-Day.

“We are not taking chances. The police across Assam have been put on high alert and we are bent on thwarting any subversive activity by the militants,” said Assam’s Director General of Police R.N. Mathur.

Thousands of army, police and paramilitary troopers are standing guard in other northeastern states, particularly Manipur, where militants Tuesday launched a grenade attack on the ancestral home of Manipur Agriculture Minister Loken Singh.

“The minister was not at home during the attack at our house in Bishnupur district. No one was injured,” said his brother Sanjoy Singh.

In Assam, unidentified militants lobbed a grenade Monday at the office premises of the superintendent of police in the western Bongaigaon district, creating panic, but no damage.

Four frontline separatist groups in the region have called a boycott of Independence Day celebrations Aug 15 and have called a general strike from 1 a.m. to 6 p.m. on that day.

The four rebel groups that have announced their boycott through a statement e-mailed to journalists are the United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF) - comprising several major militant outfits in the state - the Kamatapur Liberation Organization (KLO) and the Tripura People’s Democratic Front (TPDF).

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has cancelled all night trains passing through the region until Aug 16.

“We do not want to risk the lives of passengers. The people would certainly understand our compulsions,” said a NF Railway spokesman.

It has now become routine for separatist rebel groups in the northeast to call for boycott of all important days in the Indian national calendar, chief among those days being the Independence Day and the Republic Day Jan 26.

“This may be a routine call by the rebels but the authorities cannot afford to take things easy because Aug 15, 2004, the ULFA triggered a blast at an Independence Day parade in Assam’s Dhemaji town, killing more than 10 schoolchildren,” said Wasbir Hussain, director of the Guwahati-based Centre for Development and Peace Studies, a think-tank.

Cheapest Flights Help Please?

Wednesday, August 13th, 2008

Hello everyone <3 my family and I are going to California (from New York) in November (the week of thanksgiving) and I was wondering if anyone new of a website that offered cheap flights.

Cheap flights are not gone forever, they’re just harder to find and occur less than they used to depending on dates, airports leaving from/arriving to, etc.

Try this site- it is a Travelocity.com and AIG travel insurance partner site and it is worth checking out to see if the pricing is right.

Tuna Fishing Charter

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Tuna Fishing is regarded by anglers as one of the best adventures in the world. The waters off the Massachusetts coast are one of the best places in the world to find world-class tuna. There are charter boats that will take you out for a full day or half day excursion. Along the way you will visit places like Stellwagen Bank which is known worldwide for its large population of Blue fin Tuna.

Swimbaits are a type of lure that is commonly used on a tuna fishing charter. They are essentially just plastic or rubber “fish shaped” bodies rigged on a jig head. Some swimbaits are the type where the body is separate from the jig head and must be rigged by the angler. This allows versatility in jig head size along with the ability to re-use the jig head with other baits and colors. Some types of lures come either pre-rigged or with the jig head “built-in” to the body of the bait. These lures are extremely versatile and can be used in a wide variety of fishing conditions. They are ideal because they will catch any fish that feeds on other fish, shrimp, crabs, crawfish, etc.

For people who have been on a carnival cruise…?

Thursday, July 3rd, 2008

im gonna be going on the ship “fascination” to the bahamas in a 2 months and i was wondering if theirs anything that i should know based on what you learned from being on a cruise (like any regrests).

We have been on 4 cruises. 3 with Carnival, and the most recent one with Princess. We wanted to try out an alternate cruise line. I’ll tell you what. We just booked our 5th, and it’s back with Carnival. We have learned a few ropes after several cruises. Pack your first change of clothing in your carry on because it takes time for your luggage to be delivered to your stateroom. Before digging in at noon, walk around and look at all 6 chow lines. They’re all different. One is called ethnic food of the day and changes daily. You can get items from several different lines. 16 oz aluminum Budweiser bottles can be purchased in ‘buckets’ and you save a little money. Don’t try and skip out on the muster drill. They count passengers and check every cabin. Next time Cruising Do’s & Dont’s and Great Cruises with Samantha Brown are on The Travel Channel, watch them. Bring sun block, flip flops, over the counter meds, and wrist bands, (if you’re the slightest bit concerned about motion sickness) with you from home. These items are available in the on board store, but expensive. Just a quick price comparison, Pringles are $3.50 a can on board. They are one dollar at home. Last but not least, for Heaven sake, set out your last change of clothing before setting your luggage outside your cabin door the final night. You wouldn’t want to be one of those people mentioned at the debarkation talk who flys home in a bathrobe!!!

What About Luggage Sets

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

If you are going to travel overseas, either to have a wonderful summer vacation in the Bahamas or to attend a very important business convention abroad, one of the important things that you have to consider is your luggage. This is not only for carrying your belongings, but also to carry them with a sense of style.

Once you have a good quality luggage set, you’re assured that your things are secure. You do not have to worry about sacrificing style and fashion in exchange for functionality, because you can find popular brands that will give you just that. The Samsonite luggage set comes in various designs and colors to fit your personality.

When buying a luggage set, consider these two things first: 1) how much is your allotted budget and 2) how frequently you travel or if you usually have companions when traveling.

If you are the kind who usually travels alone, it is recommended that you buy an individual piece of luggage first. On the other hand, if you’re a person who usually goes abroad with friends and family, it is best to get a luggage set.

There are a lot of brands that offer bags to cater to all your traveling needs but you will never go wrong on a Samsonite luggage set.
